Setting Up Your First Notion Workspace

Notion can do almost anything, which is exactly why it's overwhelming to start from a blank page. Here's a simple approach to getting your first workspace up and running without spending a weekend on it.

Start with one goal, not your whole life

The biggest mistake people make is trying to build a system that tracks everything at once. Pick one area first — budgeting, habit tracking, or a single project — and get that working before adding more.

Use a template instead of building from scratch

A pre-built template handles the structural decisions for you — databases, views, and formulas — so you can focus on filling in your actual information instead of fighting with Notion's interface.

Duplicate, don't edit the original

When you get a template, duplicate it into your own workspace first. That way, if you want to start fresh later, you still have the original layout to go back to.

Review weekly, not daily

Most people abandon a productivity system because they try to update it every single day. A short weekly review — checking goals, updating numbers, planning the week ahead — is far more sustainable long term.
